What is a Mandala?
It is a sacred symbol, usually circular, sometimes square, and sometimes another shape like the Eight-petaled Lotus. This ancient symbol is like a concentric map of the psyche and has been used by many different cultures around the world, i.e., Tibetan Buddhists, Aborigines, and Native Americans.
Why Create a Personal Mandala?
A personal Mandala can be the “eye” that opens to your interiority, into your psyche and to the symbolic language of the soul. This visual, symbolic language of the soul can reveal Truth unknown by the mind or personality.
What are the 5 Jewels or Sacred Impulses?
These jewels are qualities of Essence; and, when we’re in touch with them, they connect us with entire domains of consciousness. In the Sufi tradition these 5 Jewels are known as the Lataif.
There are five purely essential, or universal, qualities that actually exist as the intrinsic nature of your Soul. Another way to say it is that these exquisite values are fundamental to your very existence, your Beingness. These five sacred impulses are part of who and what you truly are!

These qualities are a part of our human experience and generate capacities related to living a healthy and fulfilling life. As our environment and culture shaped our ego/personality, we lost touch with this deeper part of ourselves. This loss of connection to our depth resulted in a sense of deficiency or inadequacy in certain areas of life. When we feel the deficiency we tend to compensate so we don’t feel the pain of that loss – the loss of part of our nature.
The Five Jeweled Mandalas: Inner Sacred Impulses
This series of five classes will not only introduce you to the Mandala, you will learn to use this symbolic language to discover the mysteries hidden within your soul.
Each month participants will complete a personal Mandala that embodies a specific Jeweled Mandala — one of the Inner Sacred Impulses. All art supplies such as paints, color pencils, crayons, glue, scissors, and magazines will be available in the room to be used as part of your creative process. You may, however, bring your own supplies if you wish, i.e., printed copies of personal photos, magazine pages, images printed from the internet, etc. View a small collection of mandala collages here so that you can see where your creativity can take you.
Each class is 2-hours and consists of a brief description of the specific Jewel, or sacred impulse; a 10-min. meditation with music; and then 1.5 hours for each person to create/share their own personal Mandala embodying that jewel.
